Yume Nishikigoi are based in Bristol, England, and run by Mike and Elisa Snaden. We are agents for all Momotaro Koi Farm products. We started in this wonderful hobby back in 1993, and found ourselves thoroughly addicted in no time at all. In 1997, we decided to try just one Koi Show, so took four of our Koi to the South Hants Show, where we won Grand Champion.
In January 2000, having been taught about understanding Tategoi by a Japanese ZNA judge, we started Yume Koi with one aim... To try to sell the kind of Koi that the Asian market demanded. Several breeders including Momotaro, Takigawa, and Takeda expressed their concerns that Yume Koi would fail unless we sold cheaper Koi (with higher margins), but we persevered. The rest, is history!...
Yume Koi has had excellent Koi Show success both in the UK, and in Japan, with our clients greatest accolades being… 2003 BKKS National Koi Show… Grand Champion and Baby Champion. 2004 BKKS National Koi Show… Mature Champion. 2005 BKKS National Koi Show… Grand Champion and Jumbo Champion. 2006 BKKS National Koi Show… Grand Champion, Mature Champion, and Jumbo Champion. 2007 BKKS National Koi Show… Mature Champion and Adult Champion. 2008 BKKS National Koi Show… Baby Champion.
Yume Koi is a name built purely upon reputation. We hope either this year, or next, to win the BKKS National Koi Show, not with a Jumbo Koi that we have sourced, but with a customers Koi that has been grown from Tosai, or Nisai. We feel that we are now very close to achieving this ultimate dream.
At Yume Koi, we like to think that we have changed the hobby Worldwide for many people. Our raising methods have transformed the way that many people can raise Koi, which in turn means that the Koi then become the teacher! This in turn results in people learning much more about Koi, and which ones to buy.
Mike's forte is being able to 'read' young Koi and understanding how they will develop and grow. Further to this, his knowledge of how to grow Koi, and how to control their development, is second to none. It is solely our reputation for this, that has made many breeders happy to sell Koi to us that reside in ‘Sold Ponds’ or ‘Secret facilities’. In short, they are proud of how our clients, and ourselves, raise their Koi.
Our business is very strongly focussed on buying only the absolute highest level Koi, and only ones that have a high likelihood of exceeding 80cm. When we buy Koi, we always asses them with the criteria of firstly, "Will it get big?", and secondly, "What will happen if it gets big?". If the Koi doesn't stand up well to our criteria, we don't buy it, it's simple as that! Once we have sourced these special Koi, we either leave them in Japan for growing, or we bring them back to the UK, where we can easily grow them, and condition them to the same level as the breeder could in Japan. This means, that as a business strategy, we buy the best Koi, and sell on tight margins. With tight margins, there is no room for error, and we can't have end of season 'Clearout Sales'. Instead, we make sure that if we buy a Koi as Nisai, and it is still here as Sansai.. then it has to become a Sansai of good size for it's age, and better than when it was Nisai. Because of the success we have with our keeping skills, many clients prefer to purchase Koi from us, and leave them in our care for growing.
